![]() The Worst: I suppose a benefit of this overall good-but-never-great season is that there have rarely been true stinkers to single out. “We were lying!,” she scolds Dismukes proud mom over her previous cooing over Dismukes’ squatly goofy (also college award-winning) artistic effort, Nwodim’s tone a knowing plea for everyone to stop with the pleasant chit-chat and acknowledge the truth as she sees it that her preordained doctor son is wasting his (and his parents’) precious time and money. “Creative who?,” Kaluuya’s dad spits at Redd’s announcement, while Nwodim quickly turns on Redd’s college chum Andrew Dismukes and his equally effortful post-modernist sculpture major. If a sketch is going to be powered by some people violating the social contract to humorous effect, having those characters’ behavior emerge from a more complex place makes the ensuing comedy richer, and Kaluuya and Nwodim’s veneer of suburban politesse turns on a dime once their laser-focused dream of a doctor son is diverted by Redd’s minimalist (if award-winning) mini-poem. Without overdoing things, the piece pivots on the African immigrant parents’ first-generation expectations for their son’s future, a cannily loaded little engine for the duo’s increasingly less-polite interactions with both their son and their politely encouraging neighbors. Nwodim has been sneaking up into the top echelon of the cast this season, and her mom here might be her best characterization yet. Mainly that’s down to Kaluuya and Ego Nwodim, who both brought it with vigor as pre-med turned crrative writing major Chris Redd’s disapproving parents. (The episode’s concentration of homey get-together sketches a clear nod to everyone’s post-vaccination hunger for some good old, pleasantly ordinary same-room hanging out.)īest: Of the four sketches just mentioned, the college visit piece got closest to the sort of lived-in, performer-enlivened whole I’m talking about. ![]() Here, Kaluuya’s acting chops really shone, as he created some inhabited character sketches in the midst of a lot of multi-performer party scenes, and one requisite game show sketch. ![]() It’s an ensemble, which is good, with recognized, scene-stealing pros (Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant, Kenan Thompson, Cecily Strong) routinely laying back (but for a parceled-out star turn) to give the sprawling cast some airtime. That those pieces have also been a a little underwhelming at times comes down to the fact that this overstuffed cast isn’t similarly packed with breakout stars. ![]() Another aspect of Season 46 that’s been especially refreshing has been Saturday Night Live’s preponderance of writers’ sketches, where odd premises take precedence over impressions or catchphrase-happy histrionics. What are you hoping Miley performs tonight? Again, this is going to be interesting to watch.Kaluuya’s outing almost got there, maddeningly, the Get Out star’s undeniable charisma and acting prowess enlivening sketches that uniformly and similarly get points more for outside-the-box thinking and ambition than actual execution. But I mention this simply to illustrate the time and trouble I've always taken to restore, rather than replace.and here I am saying that I'm thinking about removing the old sashes and replacing them rather than repair them. I recently removed the front door, brought it home, removed the glass, removed all paint, sanded, refinished then milled pieces to hold the glass in place, rather than glaze, and did the same thing with the one top-light and two side-lights. With the house project I'm posting about, I own it as investment property. All the windows in the 1906 house I live in are what I call, brand new, 100 year old windows. One of the most unfortunate stories that is well-known at this point is Bob Marley, the reggae legend, died of a malignant melanoma. So all of these things coupled together with the fact that people aren’t wearing sunscreen like they should and are not reapplying it, that’s what makes this a crisis situation with over 4.2 million new cases each year and getting worse and worse. So if you’re light skinned, that is, if you’re Caucasian if you’re Asian-American, if you’re a light-skinned Latino- American or light-skinned African-American, those people are also at risk for skin cancer and, in addition, people that have a history of severe blistering sunburns are absolutely at risk for skin cancer. If you’ve got red hair – I’ve got my brown hair – you need to be checked more for skin cancer. If you have a ton of moles all over your body, you need to be checked more frequently and are at a higher risk for skin cancer. If you have either one of those two things, you need to be checked more frequently. Other people that are at risk for skin cancers are people that have a family history of skin cancers or that have a personal history of skin cancers. So I tell people not to use tanning beds, there is no such thing as a safe tan, and there is no such thing as getting a base tan so that you tan better. When you use a tanning bed, tanning beds are 12 to 15 times the Ultraviolet radiation of the sun so you’re increasing your chances of getting skin cancer by over 70 percent by using tanning beds. That means there is a great increase in skin cancer in white females between the ages of 25 and 29. We see a lot of them in people that use tanning beds. So who is most at risk for skin cancers? Like I started to say before, you see it a lot with Caucasian males over the age of 50 but you can see skin cancer in anyone and everyone. Many of these people are brown, they are not all Caucasian, so the thought that sunblock should only be worn by lighter races is a flawed construct and is not reality. The bottom line is you see more Caucasian males over the age of 50 than anyone else with skin cancer but the bottom line here is that pretty much after the age of 65 one in five Americans will get skin cancer. Unfortunately, anybody with skin is at risk of skin cancer. This is because of our increased leisure time and the fact that people do not put on sunblock and if they do they do not reapply it like they should. That number is expected to increase and then increase again and continue to increase. Unfortunately, there are over 4.2 million new cases of skin cancer that were diagnosed last year alone. Everyone needs a total skin surface check at least once a year by a board certified dermatologist. ![]() Total body checks are extremely important in catching skin cancer in its early stages, before other organs are involved. People need to be aware of their skin and notice if a mole is changing if a bump or nodule appears or is not healing properly. Skin cancer is serious, and is the most common form of cancer in the United States. Additionally less than 30 percent of Americans wear sun block on a regular basis. Downie believes it will continue to increase as thousands of young women and men choose to subject themselves to the hazards of tanning beds. The springs used in the Springer-style front forks complete the look and feel of the bobber. The rigid frame of a purist Sportster bobber makes the popular bicycle-style solo saddles with springs make good sense. True old-school bobbers don't go for the fancy airbrush jobs with naked ladies, eagles, 3-D flags, and other expensive embellishment. The fuel tank, when not left a single color, incorporates simple artwork such as basic, one-color flames. You will sometimes see sportster bobbers in other colors such as bright primary blue, red, white, or even military olive, but black is by far the most common paint for these simplistic bikes. Most frequently, the frame of a Sportster bobber is painted a nice basic black. If you want to follow the traditional old-school definition of a bobber, you'll want to place your drive train into a rigid frame, preferably one that is low to the ground and stretched a bit to give your finished build a low, long, lean look. The only criteria for a Sportster bobber are that it must have a Sportster drive train and as little extra stuff as possible. All those fancy embellished bolt heads and other shiny baubles are for other types of motorcycles, not the bobbers. Perhaps you have a Sportster in the garage just waiting for this project perhaps you picked up a basket case at a recent swap meet. But not always (I'll cover Sportster conversions below). Sportster bobbers are often, however, built as custom motorcycles using the Sportster drive train which is placed into a custom frame. Strip off all the extraneous parts, chrome that doesn't perform a true function, accessories that are not required to be legal, and change out the saddle to a solo spring saddle, adding red-wall or white-wall tires mounted on stock wheels and you have a basic bobber chopper. However, you can start with a brand new bike if you prefer. Because Harley Davidson Sportster are popular motorcycles, most bobbers begin with a used stock Sportster. 1/15/2024 0 Comments Utopia bagels in new york![]() There’s something about the yeasty flavor, the density and way the bagel supports various toppings that makes it great.ĭaryl can still recall walking just a few blocks from his brother’s apartment to the original location on 19th Street and 1st Avenue. Some believe that a perfect bagel shouldn’t be too big, thinking that one person should be able to eat one bagel comfortably without feeling overly full. They’re Daryl’s first bagel love and one of the best bagels in New York City and therefore the world.Īre these bagels perfect? No. I'll come her again, but will definitely avoid “Tall Luis”.Ess-a-Bagel is one of the great pioneers of bagel making. I almost can't believe he got my order right, as he was so distracted. ![]() I waited way too long for a simple order and wish I had just been able to interact with any other staff person other than “Tall Luis” at Utopia Bagels, as they were all clearly doing their jobs better than “Tall Luis”. He clearly has other priorities that come before his job responsibilities and customer service. “Tall Luis” was checking his phone multiple times while completing my order, and when “Tall Luis” was bringing my hot sandwich to the register, he first stopped to talk to another friend before ringing my order up. When he finally began to take my order, I noticed he was considerably slower than his co-workers, who had already completed orders of multiple customers in line behind me. Even that man motioned to “Tall Luis” that I had been in line first, but “Tall Luis” said that he would be right with me, and proceeded to do some kind of phone info exchange with his acquaintance. He went up to a gentleman who was in line behind me who seemed to be an acquaintance, and appeared to start taking his order before mine. The only reason this place gets 2 stars from me is solely because of the poor service exeprience I got from a staff person today whose name appeared as “Tall Luis” on the register receipt. It's so wonderful to see how much this place has grown, and the long line of people waiting to place an order is a testament to its popularity and its scrumptious bagels. I flew into NY this morning to visit family and home. I don’t understand the hype and I think you can get much better bagels elsewhere (and much quicker than half an hour) but I’d come back for the coffee! … – showĪVOID “TALL LUIS” if you want to get your order completed without frustration. The jalapeños, hash brown, pepper jack cheese, and chorizo were delicious with the bagel but the tortilla wrap that it’s supposed to come with (as designated on the menu) may have been better. However, it didn’t have a proper bite and chew to it as I like my bagels to be. The sesame bagel was not toasted so it was soft and there was some sesame flavor. As a very standard bagel flavor, I expected utopia bagels to make an excellent cinnamon raisin but it tasted like a plain bagel with a few raisins here and there. I’ve had off the shelf supermarket bagels that had more flavor than the bagels here. The cinnamon raisin bagel was slightly too toasted but mostly it fell very short of my expectations because I could taste neither cinnamon nor raisin. I ordered an iced French vanilla coffee with milk and sugar (omg, I love unsweetened flavored coffee from bagel shops), a toasted cinnamon raisin bagel with regular cream cheese, and a sesame bagel with the filling of the breakfast burrito. ![]() Their bagels are about the size of a regular sized palm and eating just one will leave you a little hungry. ![]() The bagels at utopia bagel are quite small frankly, “normal” sized even, as far as bagels go. However, the staple of a New York bagel is the sheer size and monstrosity of the bagel. Second of all, I know bigger isn’t always better. First of all, I am a New Yorker and I’ve eaten my fair share of New York bagels. The rating is due to my high expectations (many accolades were given to this bagel shop and this bagel shop has a huge following) and the bagels that fell very short of my expectations. Regardless, these are just things I observed from my time in the bagel shop and do not affect my rating. You can’t wait near the counter where people order but you can’t be so far away that you don’t know whether your order is ready or not. This means that while the ordering process is somewhat functional, the payment process is a bit dysfunctional. You place your order with whoever is free behind the counter and you also rece ive/pay for your order with the same person. The ordering process is simple enough as you wait in line and one of the workers will call you when you’re next. I wasn’t in a rush so I didn’t mind but I cannot imagine trying to buy a quick bagel for breakfast before work. There has been and still is a lot of hype around this place as I waited about 30-40 minutes from ordering to getting my order. I live around the area but finally came to this bagel spot recently. |
